Community Notice: January 10, 2023

December 29, 2022 By Temagami First Nation

Notice to Bear Island Community Residents: January 10, 2023

Re: Food and Travel Conditions

Food Distribution:

Community members who have not travelled off-island, due to lack of transportation or due to discomfort in travel conditions at this time, are invited to come to the MgM Kitchen to pick up a supplement food supply on Wednesday, January 2023 (tomorrow), from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. If you require food to be delivered to due lack of transportation, please call the Band Office: 705-237-8943 ext. 101; food delivery services will take place between 10:00 am – 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 11th, 2023.

Please understand that the intention of the food deliveries that have been brought into the community is so that community members remain healthy and safe during this time of inclement weather. If you choose to travel, you are responsible for your own grocery supplies at this time. Any leftover food purchased in our order and not used by community members in need will be donated to Temagami First Nation’s Food Bank.

Chief and Council wish to express their appreciation to those who are providing these services to the community and keeping the community members safe.

Ice and Travel:

As mentioned in the previous update, a snowmobile trail to the Access Road has successfully marked. If community members are heading out, please stay on the trail, as the conditions off trail are not safe. The trail off Bear Island starts at Steve Laronde’s house and is marked to Loon Lodge. As every year, this trail is to be used at your own risk. Please travel with caution and care and stay safe.

At this time, shuttle services are unavailable and Medical Transportation will not be doing trips until the shuttle services resume once it is safe to do so. DPHC staff will be reaching out to those who require this service.

Victoria Grant
Interim Executive Director

Notice of Sacred Fire for Maria Twain

December 14, 2022 By Temagami First Nation

Kathleen Maria Twain. Born September 28, 1954 Passed December 13, 2022

Maria was a very easy going and loveable soul. She would befriend anyone that she met in her life. She had a smile that would light up a room and warm your soul on a cold day. She was an all around amazing woman, an amazing mother and an even more amazing grandmother.

Throughout her life, she work at many places, doing many jobs; but the job that she truly loved was working as the Medical Trans driver for the Temagami First Nation. Maria also enjoyed all the times she had spent with her sister Gladys, and her cousins Patricia Neu and Millie White, going to Elvis concerts in Collingwood.

Maria will always be remembered by her only son, Aaron Nelles (Jacyntha Birtch), her grandson Xavier Nelles, her sister Gladys Farr (Robert), her nieces Leanna Farr, Patricia Farr, Michelle Polson (Micheal), as well as many other cousins and friends. Maria is welcomed to the spirit world by her parents William Twain, and Isabel (nee Turner), as well as her brothers Donny and Jimmy and her sister Barbara.

Many thanks go out to the staff at Health Sciences North, for keeping Maria comfortable, while she started her journey down the spirit road. Donations to the Heart and Stroke foundation, in her memory, would be greatly appreciated.
