TEMAGAMI FIRST NATION AND TEME-AUGAMA ANISHNABAI ANNOUNCE THE PASSING OF DIRECTOR OF NEGOTIATIONS, HARVEY FILGER
October 26, 2020 – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harvey Filger, Director of Negotiations for Temagami First Nation.
Harvey passed away suddenly, the morning of Saturday, October 24th, 2020. We wish to acknowledge his hard work and lighthearted spirit. He was a very pleasant and knowledgeable colleague and friend.
Chief Shelly Moore-Frappier, has lowered the flag at Minowaabandan-gamiing Maawanjihidiwining, the Lakeview Gathering Place on Bear Island, Lake Temagami to half mast in respect to Harvey. Harvey worked closely with both Temagami First Nation and Teme-Augama Anishnabai Councils and he brought an abundance of knowledge and guidance in his position as Director of Negotiations. Our Economic Development Officer, John Shymko describes Harvey with fondness in the following statement, “He was one of the most intelligent people I have had the honour of knowing. Harvey had an extensive background in government, finance and First Nation relations. As practical and pragmatic as he was, Harvey was a champion of the underdog. He despised systemic abuses and bullying by institutions with significant power bases.
He had a keen wit and was undoubtably quirky, which added to his appeal. I know I will miss having him as a resource to fire ideas off on. Brutally honest in critiquing, he offered experience and sensibility in dealing with a highly imperfect world.
Harvey Filger had a tremendous amount to offer, and I, for one, will miss him dearly.”
Our deepest sympathies go out to his relations and friends.
